Reworking Your Storage Solutions

Reworking Your Storage Solutions

Organizing is not always a “once and done” activity. What works for us right now might not work five years from now, and we need to be ready to recognize it and adjust. “Pivot!”, if you will. For me, my storage solution for kids' shoes needed to be fine-tuned.

I like to get kid’s shoes a few sizes ahead so that I am ready for growth spurts, but that comes with a price- storage space! I have a lot of shoes and my storage solution up until this point was to keep them in baskets in the kids’ rooms and a few pairs that we will wear soon in a basket near our front entrance.

A tisket, a tasket, way too many baskets!

This left me with three different places for shoes and although I had a list of what I had, I was constantly running into shoe baskets, searching for a size to lend to a friend, and putting away shoes that my daughter had decided to play with (again…multiple times a day). I needed another solution.

Roll call!

Enter hanging shelves! I hung the fabric shelves in the hall closet and labeled each bin by size. Now not only are all of the shoes together in one spot, but I can also easily see them all and access them as needed. Each shelf can hold about two pairs and I will rotate sizes up as my kids get bigger. No more searching through baskets for shoes and not more wondering if I have enough in each size- one quick look and I’ll see all that I have.

So don’t be afraid to revisit a storage solution that was once working and now (for whatever reason!) isn’t anymore. Being flexible and changing your environment to better suit your needs will help to keep you be more efficient with your time and space!
